Wonderful Celtic Rituals
The Grushie

The Grushie or scramble is one of those interesting traditions that invokes lots of good karma. It is common to the Galeic speaking Celts of Ireland, The Isle of Man and Scotland.

In the old days, as the couple were leaving the church, the groom would throw a handful of sixpenny and thruppany pieces out to the village children waiting nearby.

Life was very hard in Eirin, in fact brutally hard, especially after the English conquered them and, for many a family, a couple of coins brought home from teh scramble by a young son may have meant that family could afford a meal they might otherwise not have had.

In this karmic exercise, it was believed that this act of kindness by the groom would be reciprocated throughout the couple's life ahead by acts of kindness being freely returned.
